The Department of Youth, Sports and Recreation operates after school programmes at eleven (11) public primary schools throughout the island. The After school Programme serves as a vital resource for working parents with children in providing structured programming during the hours immediately following school dismissal. Research shows that children are most vulnerable during after school hours, typically between 3:30 and 6:00 pm and when unsupervised for lengthy periods.
The After School Programme is committed to providing structured programming for their clients, which include fun sport and recreational activities. Our clients are exposed to new and innovative activities and we encourage an appreciation for new experiences and lifetime skills in a protective, healthy and safe environment during the academic year.
The After School Programme is designed for primary aged children (P1-P6) who are independently mobile and who are capable of managing their physical needs and emotional behaviors within a group setting without assistance.
The After School Programme provides many recreational club activities that are offered across our sites. Some of these clubs include:

Yoga
Yoga helps young children to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It also increases physical strength and flexibility, improves self-esteem, concentration, and strengthens an overall sense of well-being.
As a core component of an active After School Programme, Yoga is an opportunity to engage in a fun, relaxing, and therapeutic activity that promotes physical, mental, emotional wellness.
Children will engage in a fun, relaxing activity including but not limited to:
Badminton
This club is conducted in conjunction with the Bermuda Badminton Association. Trained professionals provide onsite instruction to the children in the After School Programme.
Badminton Club is an introduction to the sport that teaches children the basic skills. Children practice during the week and have their form assessed by the trainers once a week over several weeks.
Tennis
Tennis is a sport that encourages physical exercise and cognitive skills for children of all ages and stages. Playing tennis will encourage positive social skills and helps children to recognize the importance of working as a team, respecting others and what it means to be competitive. It also helps to create a sense of belonging and partnership which are great for self-esteem and the general enjoyment of the activity.
Walking Club
Walking Club is an opportunity to engage in fun aerobic activity. Children will engage in fun and dynamic Walking Club adventures.
